"Flee the evil desires of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, along with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart." --II Timothy 2:22
This passage reminds us that our Christian faith involves two things. THe first is to avoid the bad, to stay away from things that bring us down or keep us from honoring God. The second is to actively pursue and seek the good. The two go hand-in-hand and it's not really possible to become the person God wants you to be without both. The problem is that many of us settle for just one or the other. Some make their faith all about what they don't do--don't get drunk, don't sleep around, don't lie, don't cheat, etc., but their lives lack concrete action and they feel like their lives are meaningless. The problem with making Christianity simply about abstinence is that God intended it to be much more. On the other hand, some people only make their faith about the good they do like feeding the poor, donating to charity, etc, but they fail to weed out the bad in their lives, and it ends up killing them.
This week, as you think about your life, may you see the bad things that threaten to bring you down and find the focus on things that can really encourage and help. |
